Nicotine specifications are dense because the material serves multiple industries with different risk profiles. An e-liquid manufacturer reading a nicotine CoA beside a pharmaceutical buyer may focus on different fields — yet both need unambiguous identity, purity, and storage guidance. This note clarifies common grades and how to write requirements that suppliers can release against consistently.

Purity grades in commerce

Marketing terms vary. Translate them into tests:

  • High purity / extractible: Specify minimum assay and impurity panel
  • Pharmacopoeial alignment: Cite monograph chapter and edition date
  • “USP grade” without chapter: Insufficient alone — require numeric limits

Request impurity reporting for nicotine-related degradants and residual solvents used in extraction or synthesis, not only general non-volatile residue.

Dilutions and ready bases

Purchasing nicotine in diluted form (e.g. 100 mg/mL in PG) shifts responsibility:

  • Confirm base glycol specification matches your matrix
  • Define concentration verification method (titration vs. HPLC)
  • Agree on homogeneity evidence for drum-to-drum consistency

Recalculate target formulation inputs when lot assay deviates within spec — small assay drift moves final product nicotine.

Packaging and headspace

Nicotine oxidizes. Specifications should address:

  • Container material and closure type
  • Fill volume vs. headspace
  • Storage temperature band and maximum days in partial containers

Receiving in oversized drums for low-volume users increases oxidation risk unless repack SOPs are validated.

Stability and retest

Obtain stability data under your storage band. If only ambient shelf life is provided but you cold-store, justify the extrapolation in your risk file.

Define retest intervals for partial drums held in quarantine.

Writing a buyer specification

Include:

  1. Chemical form and minimum assay
  2. Impurity limits with methods referenced
  3. Appearance, color, odor
  4. Packaging configuration
  5. Labeling requirements (hazard, lot, concentration)
  6. CoA fields mandatory for ERP intake
